Jury Citation for Kate Trotter as Best Actress Award at Kashish – Mumbai International Queer Film Festival
Not only was she beautiful, a gentle reminder of what someone might look like if you mixed Sofia Loren with Meryl Streep and Catharine Deneuve, but gave a power punched performance as the mother. Her dignified and sensitive portrayal of a mother who suffered a love less marriage, having to deal with a daughter coming to terms with her sexual identity and preferences, and ultimately finding her own sexual transformation won our hearts. The Jury is pleased to award the Best Actor to Kate Trotter, who played the role of the mother Alice in the film, Tru Love.

From a fan:
Dear Ms. Trotter,
I recently saw your film performance of Alice in Tru Love and felt compelled to see your larger body of work because of it. It lead me to this page and while I seldom write “fan” letters, I definitely felt I had something worth mentioning to you.
I want to thank you for your very real, sensitive and exquisite portrayal of one half of a May/December romance in this film. I am thirty years old and a newlywed. My wife, who is 63, and I married just one year ago in British Columbia, Canada (I’m Canadian but we live in The United States). You may be surprised how often we deal with the surprise of people just meeting us that we are a couple. We are both feminine, I’m a makeup artist and she is just a very beautiful woman, and people continuously make assumptions that perhaps she is my mother. This, you can imagine, isn’t something a pretty woman wants to hear. But not only do we experience this perhaps, mild form of adversity, in addition we never see our age difference ever reflected or displayed on film or television.
Tru Love gave us a glimpse of a small fraction of our own lives and a kind of validation. Your age difference was albeit somewhat smaller than ours, but it still felt like the film gave us a bit of a voice.
Further more, your specific performance breathed life in to the – and I hate the term – “mature” character of Alice, in your movements and expressions. You were vibrant, youthful, exciting and certainly sexy. These qualities are something that time and time again gets written out of characters over 60, unless you’re Catherine Deneuve, apparently. THANK YOU for making Alice so rich, gorgeous and electrifying. You normalized what is becoming increasingly common, two women in love regardless of social confines.
I’ve recommended the film to everyone I know, naturally, imploring them to see the fabulousness of your portrayal. I am so moved by this film and it’s because of your “Alice” that I have had this reaction.
Congratulations on your award nomination, I can think of no clearer winner.

From a fan:
What an absolute joy to experience your portrayal of a mature, sexually comfortable woman. Hi Kate, I’m Judy, a 71 year old Toronto native transplanted to south west Washington. Without question this movie easily transported me home again, thanks to Kate Johnston’s writing, but your performance “blew me away!” As a result, II felt compelled to write to you (something I have never before done), to demonstrate my respect for your craft and admiration for your chosen vocations. Do you have any new projects in mind now, other than your usual coaching and teaching positions? I could sure use your confidence coaching skills as I enter the workforce again after 6 years, but alas, 3000 miles is a formidable distance for training. I trust this New Year will bring you good vines and happy relationships. Thanks for your indulgence.
Best regards
Judy

Dear Kate,
Thank you very much for the signed pics and kind note. Coming from you, which to me, is the equivalent of Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep, I sincerely thank you. My only wishes for you are to stay tru to yourself, excellent health forever, and more wonderful movies for your fans to enjoy!
Sincerely, Susan

I´m a great fan and admirer from you and a great fan of your films. I would therefore be very happy, if you can sent me two hand-signed autographed photos from you. Can you personalize one of them? Thank you very much. I would be very pleased if you could fulfill my wish. Many thanks in advance for your kindness. I wish you all the best for the future. Success may always be at your side.
Yours sincerely,

I recently watched Tru Love — what a beautiful film, and what beautiful performances by all. I am sad to say I didn’t know of you prior to watching that film, but I am rapidly trying to catch up by watching interviews and other films you have been in! Such a lovely human being you are. Thank you for sharing your beauty and strength with us all. You are the epitome of the divine feminine, and I hope to have the great fortune of meeting you one day.
